Standard posting for a story behind an lj cut so you don't overwhelm your friends. Any post over 100 words should usually go behind an lj-cut to be polite. ========================================================= Standard Header ========================================================= Title: Examples Author: danceswithgary (danceswithgary@yahoo.com) Pairing: Clark/Lex Rating: (Same as SSA - see below) Warnings: None Spoilers: episode names Word Count: Archive: Fine, just let me know (This is an example - use whatever you care to put down) Summary: It is time for a new author to learn how to post using HTML. (same summary as you would use on SSA) =========================================================== Use the above standard header for LJ for at least the first part of a story, but not SSA or most archive sites =========================================================== Notes: Started as an entry for the Challenge, or a prompt for Many thanks for beta by Any remaining errors are my responsibility. Standard Disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters herein. The characters of Lex Luthor and Clark Kent as well as any supporting characters are the property of their creators and DC Comics. Gough/Millar Inc and the WB Network TV own Smallville. Any deviations (or deviant behavior) from the originals, however, is mine. Feedback is both welcome and appreciated. ============================================================ I usually add the notes and disclaimer to the end of my posts to SSA or at the end of a single-part story. ============================================================ The key to posting in LJ is the angle brackets. They tell LJ there's a command starting and ending. The above tells LJ to hide everything after until it sees the command to stop hiding and start displaying again. Other start and stop commands you can use. Experiment in a post - you can edit an entry as many times as you like. Make this text bold inside Make this text italics inside Make this text bigger Make this text smaller Make this text big AND bold - see how you can use more than one? To call out a user or community so someone can just click on it, use To hide a URL(link) behind a word or name or sentence, use words to show example: CLex Recs Master List will only show CLex Recs Master List as a link. ============================== There is a size limit on posts to LJ, even behind cuts (65,535 bytes). You may need to split longer stories into multiple parts. I've found that the limit works out to between 7,000-10,000 words. ============================== Ratings at SSA G -- General Audiences -- No nudity, sex scenes, or scenes of drug use. Violence is minimal. PG -- Parental Guidance Suggested -- Brief nudity. No explicit sex scenes or scenes of drug use. Horror and violence do not exceed moderate levels. PG-13 -- Parents Strongly Cautioned -- No rough or persistent violence, or sexually-oriented nudity. Some scenes of drug use may be seen; some use of harsh sexually derived words. R -- Restricted -- Contains adult material. An R may be assigned for use of language, theme, violence, sex or portrayal of drug use. NC-17 -- No One Under 17 -- May contain explicit sex scenes, an accumulation of sexually-oriented language, and/or scenes of excessive violence. The NC-17 designation does not signify that the rated film is obscene or pornographic, simply that it addresses these topics. ============================== Some friendly advice to new authors ============================== I highly recommend requesting a beta before publishing any story outside your journal. Actually, if you want people to read your story and comment, a beta can be vital because many of the older fans will not read or comment if there are too many punctuation, spelling or grammar errors - including myself. I know that a storyline has to be extraordinary for me to overlook consistently poor grammar, punctuation and spelling. A few errors can be expected, I know I've had them slip through, even with a beta, but an effort should be made. That is advice, not an edict. Above all, have fun writing!
